Unsatisfied with Melbourne’s ridiculous parking prices, I stopped the car outside an old unit somewhere near Albert and Hoddle st. It was a fair walk to the Yarra to see the Moomba festival, but I didn’t mind. It was still better than giving in to the  absurd rates that Secure Parking charges despite having no guarantee or warranty that your

The gun forward injured his ankle during the third quarter of Fremantle’s draw with Sydney at the SCG on Saturday night.

What we learnt AFL Round 8: Gold Coast v Western Bulldogs

Posted on May 20th, 2013 by Daniel Paproth

WHILE the second expansion team, Greater Western Sydney, continued to struggle, the powers-that-be at the AFL can take some delight from the performance of the first true expansion team since 1995, Gold Coast.

In each of the Gold Coast’s first two seasons they won three games: against Richmond (twice), Port Adelaide, Brisbane, GWS and Carlton. In eight rounds this year, they’ve already won four – and have added St Kilda, Melbourne and now the Western Bulldogs to the list of teams they’ve beaten

AFTER losing their first seven games of 2013, South Fremantle joined the winners list for the first time this year with a 15 point victory over Peel Thunder at Fremantle Oval on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs lead at every change and despite a spirited effort from the Thunder were able to hold on and register

SANFL Round 7 Round-up: Roosters continue to charge

Posted on May 20th, 2013 by Robert Laidlaw

NOT only did North Adelaide win for the fifth time this season, to move clear in third spot on the SANFL ladder, it came from behind to beat a form team in the Eagles, to demonstrate its credentials as a legitimate premiership contender. The Roosters are finding ways to win, which is a trait traditionally

What we learnt AFL Round 8: Richmond v Melbourne

Posted on May 20th, 2013 by Football Nation

THE Melbourne Football Club may not have won but they at least played well enough for fans and the media to ease up on the pressure that they have piled onto the club as Richmond notched their fifth win of the season with a 34-point victory in front of 39,148 fans at the MCG.

Indeed while the Demons walked off the field with a sense of having achieved something, the Tigers were less than enthusiastic about their own performance as they struggled to put away their surprisingly feisty opponent

What we learnt AFL Round 8: Carlton v Port Adelaide

Posted on May 20th, 2013 by Justin Cooper

CARLTON coach Mick Malthouse admits the Blues remain very much a work in progress after grinding their way to an 18-point win over a disappointing Port Adelaide at Etihad Stadium.

Carlton won a scrappy game 16.13 (109) to 14.7 (91), with captain Marc Murphy kicking three goals playing mostly as a forward in his 150th match, Jeff Garlett snaring four and Heath Scotland slotting two majors in his 250th game

What we learnt AFL Round 8: Adelaide v St Kilda

Posted on May 19th, 2013 by Brent Diamond

ADELAIDE’S 40-point win over St Kilda at AAMI Stadium on Sunday was an important one as it levelled its season at 4-4 after eight rounds.

The Crows, while not as dynamic as last week against the Giants, still managed to run the Saints off their legs. Tom Lynch kicked 10 goals last week for the Giants and against the Saints, he finished with 2-1 but perhaps may have enjoyed the win better given he was a former Saint

What we learnt AFL Round 8: Hawthorn v GWS Giants

Posted on May 19th, 2013 by Brent Diamond

HAWTHORN coach Alastair Clarkson says the scoreboard “flattered” his team in its 83-point win over Greater Western Sydney at Aurora Stadium.

And while the result was largely a comfortable one, the most important factor to come out of the round for the Hawks is that they are flying on top of the ladder after seven straight wins. After round one, the Hawks appeared to be questioning themselves after the round one loss to Geelong

HAWTHORN youngster Jed Anderson has made a successful return from a hamstring injury with three goals in the Box Hill Hawks’ 60-point win over the Casey Scorpions. AFL Ladder Round 8 2013

Posted on May 19th, 2013 by Football Nation

WITHOUT doubt the biggest change has come about with Geelong’s first loss of the season.  In coming up just one goal short against Collingwood, the door was opened for Hawthorn to seize top spot on the ladder for the first time this year. Geelong hasn’t fallen far, after all they’ve only lost one game, and

VFL wrap: Pies end Cats’ winning run

IT’S ironic that it was Collingwood that was the first team of the season to beat the reigning premier Geelong by 13-points at Victoria Park on Saturday. It was only last year that the Pies also broke Port Melbourne’s famous winning streak that included its 2011 flag. But perhaps almost more ironic is the general

FREMANTLE and Sydney played in this season’s first draw on Saturday night at the SCG despite the Dockers trailing by 27 points midway through the final term.

Fremantle had plenty of opportunities early in the game to hurt the Swans on the scoreboard but inaccurate kicking in front of goal cost the harbor side dearly

What we learnt AFL Round 8: Collingwood v Geelong

Posted on May 19th, 2013 by Football Nation

IN a game that even their most loyal followers thought would be beyond them, the Collingwood Football Club demonstrated a toughness and resilience that has silenced the chorus of naysayers.

In front of an MCG crowd of 66,768 the Magpies handed Geelong their first defeat of season and in doing so re-invigorated their 2013 campaign

What we learnt AFL Round 8: Essendon v Brisbane

Posted on May 19th, 2013 by Jack McClane

IN a massive upset, the Brisbane Lions headed to Melbourne, expected by many, except their most ardent fans, to lose but instead they upset the number two placed side and came away with the points.

Simon Black started the match in his second game of the year after being the Sub last week against West Coast. He found plenty of the ball with 12 first term touches and all of them were silky and effective.

WITH only seconds to spare, Nic Naitanui became the showstopper last night, as a thrilling after the siren goal stole the show from North Melbourne.

The win saved the Eagles from another gut-wrenching home ground loss after chalking up a poor 3-2 record this year.

Déjà vu came rushing back for Eagles fans, as the heroics of Leo Barry’s 2005 grand final-saving mark were quickly reversed – this time at the opposite end

ST KILDA and Carlton have produced another thriller in their annual Monday night clash, with the Saints victorious by nine points infront of 34,000 at Etihad Stadium.

The Blues had a horrid start to the match, losing Michael Jamison (shoulder), David Ellard (hamstring) and Chris Yarran (hamstring), on top of the late withdrawal of utility Andrew Carrazzo (calf) and the absent Jarrad Waite (suspension) and Bryce Gibbs (hamstring)

THE heat remains on embattled Melbourne coach Mark Neeld and while some key media personalities from Melbourne’s major newspapers the Herald Sun and The Age were calling for his head today, it appears likely that Neeld may well see out at least another week. What we learnt AFL Round 7: GWS Giants v Adelaide

Posted on May 12th, 2013 by Football Nation

AFTER losing Taylor Walker the question that hung over this Adelaide Crows team was who would step up and provide the team with it’s target in the forward line.

After handing the GWS Giants a 135 point loss, the Crows would seem to have found the answer to that question with Tom Lynch having a career day with a 10 goal performance.

Lynch, 22, was traded from St Kilda to Adelaide after the end of the 2011 season as part of a three-way deal with Richmond, which saw Ivan Maric go to the Tigers, and with the Saints getting the Crows’ second-round draft pick

IN what was a classic crossroads game for Richmond, the Tigers reversed their three-game losing streak with a much needed road win over Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium yesterday afternoon.

The Tigers had begun the season with three straight wins before dropping the last three and had settled into their all too familiar ninth place spot on the ladder and a narrow loss to Fremantle two weeks ago almost demonstrating how in spit of improvements the club was not quite there yet

THE AFL’s round 5 was a mixture of old and new. We saw the traditional ANZAC Clash of Collingwood and Essendon. (See my ANZAC Clash infographic!) We also saw the tradition of ‘Richmond getting beaten by less than a goal’. We saw the two newest AFL clubs, Gold Coast and GWS battle it out. And we also witnessed the

FORMER club great David Schwarz has cast doubt on Melbourne coach Mark Neeld being at the helm as coach next season. Schwarz appeared clearly frustrated at his old clubs’ situation and doesn’t believe that players are improving or performing for the coach. “I don’t think so. No,” Schwab said on Fox Footy’s Open Mike. “I

IN mild conditions at Preston City Oval on Sunday, Port Melbourne outgunned a gallant Northern Blues outfit to take a 16 point win. The Borough had a ripping start, kicking six goals to the Blues’ two, to take a 26 point buffer into quarter time. It wasn’t all smooth sailing for Port, with key forward

SANFL Round 5 Round-up: Coaches take centre stage

Posted on April 29th, 2013 by Robert Laidlaw

ANZAC Day is a special event on the SANFL calendar but it wasn’t the football on the field that created the headlines this week, it was the half time confrontation between the coaches. Reigning premier Norwood moved back to the top of the ladder after beating West Adelaide by 26 points, after trailing by 10

What we learnt AFL Round 5: Brisbane v Melbourne

Posted on April 28th, 2013 by Jack McClane

THE Brisbane Lions secured their second win of the season after a hard fought win over the Melbourne Demons at The Gabba in front of a disappointing crowd of just 19,018.

In a scrappy affair that won’t make too many 2013 highlight reels, Brisbane did just enough to see off the plucky Dees who were hoping to get their second win in succession

Five weeks in and we are starting to see some separation amongst the teams in this year’s competition but as you cast your eye over the top eight there is no more surprising team at the top end than Port Adelaide. The Power is sitting very comfortably at the number two spot and deservedly so.

What we learnt AFL Round 5: Port Adelaide v West Coast

Posted on April 28th, 2013 by Chris Cantatore

PORT Adelaide came back from a 41 point deficit late in the third term to stun the West Coast Eagles by five points on Saturday night at AAMI Stadium.

It was vintage West Coast for the first half with the Eagles overwhelming the Power through the midfield and generating a lot of supply inside their forward half of the ground

What we learnt AFL Round 5: Western Bulldogs v Geelong

EVERYONE expected Geelong to race away with a thumping victory over the Western Bulldogs on Saturday night, but few would have predicted what happened in the final term.

Leading by 36 points at three-quarter time it seemed to be a matter of how much the Cats would win by. But Geelong could manage just five behinds in the last quarter, going goalless as the Bulldogs kicked three goals

This year the Crows have managed just two wins in five games and have yet to consistently show any of the form that saw them finish second on the ladder in
