VFL takes it month by month

THE VFL is hoping ABCTV’s selection of ‘blockbuster’ matches will appeal enough to boost ratings figures as the broadcaster weighs up whether to continue its coverage of state league footy.
ABCTV signed off on a one year deal with the option of a second. The hope of the coverage continuing next year depends mainly upon ratings which have been average to good at best heading into the second half of the season.
Interestingly, the station has steered clear of hosting any Frankston matches in which the Dolphins have shown some disappointment. The Dolphins, who have played some competitive footy and won a match this season, are seen as a low drawing card for ABC coverage.
The VFL and ABC are for the first time deciding on the schedule matches every month rather than all ABCTV matches being scheduled in at the start of the year.
It means that the majority of matches are somewhat against between the power teams of the competition with plenty of AFL-listed players in the thick of the action.
It is not known whether Frankston will be handed an ABCTV game in the remaining matches for coverage during the season, particularly considering it is unlikely to make finals.
The on-air talent is shifting, perhaps not due to the instability but moreso for career opportunities.
ABCTV commentator Darren Boyd is a part of 3AW’s AFL football broadcast on some Saturdays which means the station has opted for some untried TV talent including the likes of BPM Media’s Peter Mercato to fill the void. Peter Donegan will also miss some of the second half of the season as he takes part in the Olympics coverage.
