Football Nation Rumour MillIN the normal course of our activities we come across stories and rumours that have yet to be reported elsewhere or that, while impossible to substantiate, would be of interest to our readers.

We ran a “Trade Whispers” post for last year’s off-season that proved popular so in advance of the start of the 2013 season we are launching this post as a place where we can add some of the rumours and whispers that we hear.

Please note: these are rumours that have been passed on to us and they are not news so take them with a grain of salt.

Likewise is you hear something that you think we should know then you can send us a tip-off from this page.

 07/03/2012:

We wrote earlier today about the escalation of the Stephen Dank controversy with 14 players for the Cronulla Sharks facing suspensions of between six months and two years.  If that proves to be true then suddenly the rumour that we heard about Essendon is a little less difficult to believe.

ASADA has come down hard on athletes and their governing bodies for doping whether their violations were intentional or accidental and you only have to look at the recent examples of VFL players Wade Lees (Casey Scorpions, banned for 18 months) and Matthew Clark (Frankston, nine months) to see that in action.

What we’ve heard is grim news for Essendon with both players set to be suspended and coaches to be fired.

According to the rumour (and again we repeat this is a rumour) up to four coaches will be dismissed in the coming weeks but not, at this stage James Hird or Mark Thompson, and a staggering 38 players face suspension over the next few months.

“ASADA, they’re pretty tough. I don’t know what’s going to happen with Essendon, but I know they won’t leave anyone behind, they’ll take anyone and everyone,’’said Lees after he was sanctioned in early February.

If any of this should come to pass it will have a staggering impact on the AFL that will be broader than just what happens this season.
