Austinn JonesFORMER ST Kilda midfielder Austinn Jones will coach Bendigo’s VFL team from next season as it goes stand alone in the competiition for the first time.

Jones was appointed this morning after a press conference held in Bendigo to launch its new coach.

Bendigo will split with Essendon at the end of the season after almost a decade of partnership together in the competition.

Hayden Skipworth, the current Bendigo coach, will coach Essendon’s stand alone VFL team from next season.

Jones, who will continue his current coaching commitments at Beaconsfield in the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League, will begin at Bendigo part-time and become full-time for two seasons from October.

Jones said his main role for the rest of this season will be to try and retain the current Bendigo VFL list and aim to persuade those such as Hawthorn premiership player Rick Ladson and former Hawk Matt Little to remain at the club, despite being tied to administration roles at Essendon.

“My role with Bendigo which will be part time from now which will be to keep the Bendigo-listed players on board and have a look around Victoria and recruit some footballers to come into Bendigo in season 2013,” Jones said.

“I’ve definitely come up to be the coach long term…we’re going to make it work,” he said.
