State league clubs have been forced to have scheduled byes mainly because of the Foxtel Cup, an initiative by the AFL.

Already in the VFL, Collingwood and Geelong field stand alone clubs while Essendon will field its own stand alone club from next season.

Adelaide’s push comes after midfielder Chris Knights is forced to return from injury via a junior trial game, while the Power ruckman Jarrad Redden will also play also against the state under 18 squad today.

Crows football chief Phil Harper said: “We’d rather Chris stay with the Eagles than go to an SANFL reserves side,” Harper told the Adelaide Advertiser. “We’d rather have our own reserves team.

“There now has to be some motivation for all parties (AFL and SANFL clubs) to come up with the solution.”

Power midfielder Stephen Salopek was forced to play with Glenelg reserves for the second time this year.

It comes as the VFL tribunal has had issues surrounding its reports in recent weeks with its three man panel being put in a difficult situation with cases such as Geelong’s David Wojcinski (handed a two match ban which effectively became four) and Angus Graham (cleared of a kicking charge).

In the VFL, every club has four scheduled byes this season.

The state games next week further compounds the issue with no AFL-aligned teams in action at state league level.

West Coast and Fremantle put a submission in to the WAFL board last season to enter stand alone clubs into the competition but that was later denied.

There are expected to more stand alone AFL clubs in the VFL over the next three years. Some AFL clubs believes this is a massive advantage for development of players.

Davis was on the radar of some AFL clubs and was linked to Port Adelaide, West Coast and Fremantle during last year’s pre-season draft after quitting Collingwood last year.

Former Port Melbourne player and now at Norwood, Nathan Batsanis, along with team-mate Luke Jerico, Eagles’ Angus Rowntree and Central District defender Tom Collier were all added to the SANFL’s list late in a bid to press for selection.

Former Coburg player Nick Liddle has also been named for the SANFL team.

Join Football Nation for our VFL match of the round between the Werribee Tigers and the Northern Blues on Saturday afternoon at Avalon Airport Oval from 1:00pm.

Tune into our coverage and our VFL expert Daniel Paproth will be on deck to answer any questions you may have during our live updates.

1:55 – Hansen marks strongly on a lead but picks the wrong option in Speight, and the Blues clear.

1:54 – Smith races down the wing after a Blues turnover but misses. 30-19.

1:51 – Gibson kicks his second for the Tigers. 29-19.

1:49 – Second quarter begins. Ball ricocheting between 50s early.

1:41 – Quarter time at Avalon Airport Oval. Werribee leads 3.5.23 to Northern Blues 3.1.19. Ben Ross best on ground in the first term, racking up 10 touches through the middle of the ground. Blues had more midfield contributors earlier but seemed to slow down in the last five minutes.

1:39 – Hansen pulls in a screamer over a pack, has a shot from 40m and boots it high but never on line. 23-19.

1:37 – Gibson kicks Werribee’s third after Ruggles clears through the midfield. Lack of composure there from the Blues. 22-19 in favour of Werribee.

1:36 – Ross with yet another inside 50, Lynch goes for goal but it’s touched on the line. 19-16.

1:34 – Blues punishing Tigers heavily for poor turnovers. Kane Lucas has a shot from the right forward flank and kicks it out on the full. 19-15.

1:32 – McKinley has a shot from the boundary 55m but it’s touched over the line.

1:31 – Burgess soccers through a behind. 19-14 in favour of Northern.

1:30 – Thomas with a beautiful long goal from 55m out following a Ben Sharp turnover coming out of defence. Blues up by four points.

1:29 – Tigers intercept at half-back, tear down the wing through Ross, but turn it over going inside 50.

1:26 – Port Melbourne progress to the next round of the Foxtel Cup with a big win over NT Thunder. Ross and Wormald sweeping well off half-back for Werribee.

1:24 – Castello gives away a free kick and the Blues are off down the wing through Totevski, who is providing a handful early.

1:22 – Ben Ross runs down the wing to deliver cleanly to Robbie Tarrant, who kicks a behind. 1.1 for him so far today.

1:20 – Totevski gets a handball from Bransgrove to kick the Blues’ second.

1:19 – Kane Lucas boots a goal for the Blues to bring it back to a 7pt lead for the Tigers.

1:15 – Castello busy early, sets up an easy goal for Lachie Hansen. No pressure from the Northern Blues.

1:14 – Run through the middle sees Castello have a shot that lands in play. Martiniello eventually marks 45m out on a 60 degree angle and misses to the near side.

1:13 – Scrappy start. Reserves: Werribee 29.17 d Blues 5.8

1:12 – Will Martiniello with a great smother in the Tigers’ back half.

1:10 – Game about to start. Overcast conditions.

Werribee currently sits 5th on the ladder, with a 4-3 record. Meanwhile fellow 2011 preliminary finalists Northern Blues sit second-last, with a 1-5 record.

The Hawks have battled bravely without some of their star pre-season recruits including skipper Beau Muston, Will Johnson and Marc Lock, who has been injured in patches.

Muston is expected to return next week from a groin injury.

“Will Johnson or Lock or Muston and those sort of blokes that we need and obviously Sam Gibson who has been pretty crucial to us. I suppose we were in a similar position last year on the ladder and we’ve just got to keep improving,” coach Damian Carroll said.
With that trio up and running, the Hawks expect instant improvement.
Having said that, Carroll believes there are some players within the group that haven’t cut it so far this season.
“We’d just like to see some consistent improvement but certainly some guys haven’t come on as quickly as we would’ve liked no doubt,” he said.
He described last week’s loss to Casey – in which it scored one goal in the first half – as disappointing.

“I think our midfield did struggle no doubt. I think we had as much ball as them but weren’t as clean as them. We struggled and didn’t really use the ground that well. Full credit to Casey, they were really clean at the footy. They missed some shots at goal like us but they certainly had a very potent forward up there,” he said.
“I think it’s been inconsistent. We came up against a good side today. I know that we picked up a few players over the pre-season but not really many of them are playing for us.”

North Ballarat, who has also struggled, will also be looking to get its third win on the board after an impressive win over Coburg last week.

Zebras coach Simon McPhee believes a few of his players should have perhaps been named after a strong start to the season, including ruckman Michael Sikora, midfielder Adam Cockie and forward Jackson Coleman.

“A little bit (disappointed), we probably thought that there was a couple of other blokes that could’ve pressed for selection but that’s up to the selectors to pick a team that they see fit and we weren’t in it but it’s something that you live with so that’s Ok,” McPhee said.

Casey coach Brett Lovett also thought several of his players such as defender Evan Panozza, Luke Tynan and the injured Wade Lees should have been named.

He said with a win-loss ratio of 6-1, the Scorpions should have had at least one player in the squad.

It is believed Panozza only missed out because he was compared to Port’s Sam Pleming, who eventually won the spot in defence.

Box Hill was the only other team without a player selected in the state squad.

The Scorpions and the Zebras have been the most improved teams in the competition – perhaps along with Geelong – heading towards the half way point.

After their 30-point win over the Blues last week, McPhee said the Zebras still had plenty of improvement left in them.

“We’re probably not as consistent as we would like to be over the four quarters but we’ve won five games so that’s put us in a reasonable spot,” McPhee said.

Brent Diamond http://vimeo.com/6479066 <![CDATA[Doubt surrounds the comeback of Hodge]]> http://www.footballnation.com.au/?p=20037 2012-05-18T03:57:56Z 2012-05-18T03:33:35Z Luke HodgeTHERE is uncertainty surrounding the comeback of Hawthorn skipper Luke Hodge from injury given he will miss again through knee soreness for this week’s clash against Fremantle and is in doubt for next week’s clash as well.

Hodge’s body has taken a huge battering since his career began at the Hawks in 2001 and now it appears he may struggle to regain full fitness any time soon. There have been rumours around that Hodge is also has a bad back as well as the knee soreness.

Coach Alastair Clarkson said this morning that Hodge’s knee is worse than first thought.

“He’s still got some swelling in his knee and we just can’t take a trick with it at the minute,” Clarkson said.

“We’ve probably got to get that re-scanned and looked at again early next week … because it’s just not coming good quickly for us.

“He’s certainly not going to play this week and he’d even be in doubt for next week too unless we can get the swelling out of that knee.

“We’ll get that looked at and we’ll have a much better idea of what’s causing it to be so slow.”

Hodge is a key to the Hawks’ premiership chances and if he wasn’t to get some continuity into his game this season, then there must be some lingering doubt about whether he can be a strong part of the Hawks chances this year.

Tell us what you think. Can the Hawks win the flag without a fully fit Luke Hodge?

The Werribee Tigers host the Northern Blues from Avalon Airport Oval in a massive game for both teams. The Blues have been super competitive in most games, except for the smashing to Port Melbourne. You feel Werribee is starting beginning to show signs of its A-grade game.

Collingwood tackle Bendigo at Victoria Park and certainly the talk will surround the AFL-listed talent on display. Chris Tarrant will resume from injury, as will Essendon’s Tayte Pears and Scott Gumbleton.

And the Box Hill Hawks will host North Ballarat with both teams desperately needing a win entering the break.

The Hawks had their most disappointing performance of the season last week against Casey, while the Roosters finally broke through for their second win of the year against Coburg.

Max Prophet <![CDATA[Max’s AFL Footy Bets for Round 8 2012]]> http://www.footballnation.com.au/?p=20021 2012-05-18T00:49:48Z 2012-05-18T00:30:14Z Round 7 provided us with some stellar performances: The Crows smashing Geelong from pillar to post; The Tigers delivery in spades against the Swans; Collingwood finally clicking up north; The Bombers announcing themselves in dazzling style and the Saints well and truly bursting the Blues bubble – all too much for this mug punter!

We’ve been hitting on three quarters of our multi bets each week but there’s always a surprise result that catches us out. Sadly, this week’s scenario looks no easier! Let’s take a look at the games:

Collingwood ($1.71) vs. Geelong ($2.15):

The Magpies finally got out of first gear on the weekend, dismantling the Lions in every position. This is a result of the Pies newcomers (Sinclair, Seedsman & Yagmoor) stepping up in line with the new age stars like Beams, Reid and Sidebottom (hehehehe). I’ve a sense they have some real momentum at the moment and it will take a determined Cats outfit to derail the train on Friday night. The Cats do love a challenge though, and as we saw last weekend (Bulldogs & Saints), teams on the slide need to take a stand at some stage and what a stage it will be at the ‘G’ in front of 90,000 screaming fans in a rematch of last year’s Grand Final. These teams opened at flip of the coin odds, but all the money has been for the Pies and I will be looking to kick start our multi on the Carringbush as well. Cats have won the last two by 38 and 96 points.

Suggested bet: Collingwood at the margin (1-39) @ $2.35

Port Adelaide ($2.70) vs. North Melbourne ($1.47):

The Power have shown resilience to date, but that’s about it. After some early season enthusiasm they seem to have settled down to play some pretty ordinary football. I’ve no idea whether the players have any respect for themselves, let alone Matthew Primus, who must feel like he is beating his head against the wall. Their opponents have been given a public shellacking from coach (Brad Scott), who seems just as scary on either side of the boundary line to me. I suspect the Roos will come to play this week and I think they can be backed with confidence.

Suggested bet: Take the Roos to win for plenty @ $1.47

Hawthorn ($1.20) vs. Fremantle ($4.60):

Ross Lyon’s Dockers outfit was labelled boring midweek, but the same cannot be said of the Hawks with Buddy and Cyril set to take centre stage come Saturday afternoon. The <insert boring adjective> Dockers will look to stymie Hawthorn’s potency, but I cannot see them being able to sustain this for four quarters. Hawthorn are likely to score 14+ goals and Fremantle, without an array of obvious goal scorers, will likely struggle to notch 12 majors. I’m betting this will be the difference in the end.

Suggested bet: Take the Hawks to win, but expect the Dockers to stay close. Hawks (1-24 points) @ $3.60

Sydney ($1.08) vs. Melbourne ($8.00):

On face value, it appears the Swans will make a one act affair of this one. The Swans were brave in defeat last week, but they never really threatened the Tigers and no sooner had they laid claims to being genuine premiership contenders, they dropped two pivotal games (ala Carlton). The short odds are not worth entertaining here and it is either the exotics or Melbourne for me, and I’ve a sneaky suspicion the Dees might pull off an unlikely upset. I’ve spoken to a few courageous Demons supporters who basically laughed off my prediction, so proceed with caution!

Suggested bet: Going with my heart, Demons to win @ $8

Western Bulldogs ($1.16) vs. GCFC ($5.25):

The Bullies have really sprung to life aver the past two weeks, albeit splitting those games with their opponents. Their midfield has grown a leg during this time with Boyd & Griffin running amok. The Suns are still winless despite some good contests, but I suspect it will stay that way given the absence of Swallow & Brennan from a team that lost to GWS. This game is in Darwin which requires some preparation as it usually produces a greasy environment which the Dogs have seemingly adapted to with 4 wins from 4 attempts. I can’t see an upset here.

Suggested bet: Back the Bulldogs to kick the highest score of the round @ $6

Essendon ($1.50) vs. Richmond ($2.60):

Dreamtime. Dream game! I can’t wait for this one – let’s hope it is a kick either way at the final siren. Both teams are progressing well, slight advantage to Essendon who have lost just the one game by a point thus far. But the Tigers have a sniff of success and it appears Damien Hardwick’s diligent planning and hard work is beginning to be rewarded. Recent history between these two teams doesn’t give us much to work with and perhaps we must look to the ladder for tip in the right direction (2nd vs. 12th). It doesn’t seem that long ago both Hird and Hardwick were themselves running around on the MCG, both with the Bombers of course and I’m sure there is a healthy respect for each other and their respective game plans. Hurley back is a bonus and for mine tops them off nicely, although I can’t see myself putting too much on the line as both teams appear capable of winning this one.

Suggested bet: None, just enjoy this one!

Brisbane ($1.20) vs. GWS ($4.60):

A nightmare matchup for the Lions who would have put this game in the bank preseason. Instead, they go in after three successive thumpings (37, 67 & 58 points) against an outfit that have just chalked up their first AFL win and will be full of confidence. Sheedy’s rotation policy continues and they are without of few of their good performers to date, but that theme has been consistent and they appear to deal with it quite well from week to week. Expect the Lions to hit the ground running with chests out, but the young Giants outfit don’t give up and I certainly won’t be taking the short odds on offer here!

Suggested bet: Take the Brisbane/GWS halftime/fulltime double @ $16

Carlton ($1.40) vs. Adelaide ($2.95):

Another seemingly even contest and one that the Blues will be desperate to win in order to re-establish their presence on the ladder. Their two losses to date (Essendon & St Kilda) revealed some weaknesses that I am sure the Crows will similarly look to exploit. They certainly have the right cattle to do so as well as they bullocked their way past Geelong last week in a show of strength that caught many by surprise. They have lost Taylor Walker though, who has roamed the forward fifty like he owns it this year and I expect that will be significant as the Blues can be suspect down back. I don’t buy in to the home ground advantage as Adelaide travel very well and I’m not sure the Blues love Etihad. The value here appears to be with the Crows.

Suggested bet: Going with the Crows (1-39) @ $3.40

West Coast ($1.39) vs. St Kilda ($3.00):

I’m still a bit shocked by the ease with which Essendon took apart the Eagles last week and I’m sure the Saints will take great heart from that encounter. They looked a bit second rate, but you can’t be great each week and it may pay to forgive them on this occasion. Not as shocking was the Saints dispatching of the Blues on the Monday nighter, although they were not favoured by the punters. The addition of Milera and Saad alongside Milne reads quite potent when you consider they have Koschitzke, Reiwoldt and Stanley in the air. If they can maintain the rage we could see an exciting and close game to round out the …..round. Naitanui is an important inclusion for the Eagles and gives them reason to quantify a form reversal. Interestingly, the Saints have won 4 of the last 5 against the Eagles including two at Patersons Stadium.

Suggested bet: Take with Saints with a 17.5 point start @ $1.92

This week’s wager:

 1. Bulldogs to kick the highest score of the round for $50 @ $6
 2. Matthew Boyd to collect the most disposals of the round for $50 @ $5

Kitty: -$425

Happy punting!
