Last night’s game was filled with anticipation and excitement, not for the game that was about to unfold, but for the biggest comeback in recent football history.

For a preseason match, it was a game held to high expectations. The 37,000 people in the crowd were expecting a thriller match, for it was the first time in 18 months Ben Cousins would take the football field.

Richmond fans welcomed Cousins to Tigerland, giving him an almighty roar as he approached the ground. There were banners of praise and high hopes for Cousins as he made his comeback to football for the Richmond side.

The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement and the crowd eagerly followed his every movement. Supporters from both sides watched as he made his way around the field – it really seemed that all eyes in the stadium were on Cousins.

Although cheer and support was coming from the wave of Richmond fans, some from Collingwood had a different agenda. Each possession he took in their direction was awarded with a loud boo, some fans yelling abuse in his direction!

But majority of the crowd felt the angst for Cousins to make his comeback a success. The hope of excellence was felt with his every possession.

It was Collingwood who played the best on the night and won the game, but Richmond fans still walked away smiling. The fans didn’t seem to mind the 46-point loss and they left the stadium with their heads held high. It was easy to say they were there for one thing only, to see the recovering footballer revive his football dream.
