FORMER Essendon champion James Hird is set to be announced coach of the Bombers this week.

Hird is understood to have met his business partners at Gemba and told them of his decision today in an emotional meeting.

It is likely to be announced at the end of the week that Hird has agreed to terms with the Bombers to be their next coach – following on from sacked coach Matthew Knights.

Hird’s only sticking point to the decision was his interests at Gemba but it appears likely that he can stay on as a shareholder of the business.

Hird’s name has been linked to the coaching job since Knights was given the axe at the end of the season.

It is also likely that former Port Adelaide coach Mark Williams will be named as an assistant to Hird possibly along with Hird’s former team-mate Dean Wallis.
