Saints in tatters without Riewoldt

THE massive loss of Nick Riewoldt has put St Kilda into disaster mode following its 61-point loss to Carlton on Monday night at Etihad Stadium.

The Blues snapped a nine game losing streak against the Saints with Eddie Betts booting five goals and Jeff Garlett four.

But the problems are firmly with the Saints, who have bowed to a defensive game plan since the loss of Riewoldt to a severe hamstring tear.

He will be sidelined for a further 10 weeks.

Who can the Saints turn to for salvation? They feel that they cannot win a game playing attacking football without Riewoldt. They don’t have enough confidence in Justin Koschitzke. Their midfield was blown away by Carlton last night. Stephen Milne was rarely sighted. They will lose a lot of confidence out of this loss.

They must turn it around and play attacking football against Essendon this week – or else they will end up in the same position.

No-one should be surprised about the Saints missing Riewoldt. Brisbane’s skipper J Brown is battling a groin injury (op?) and can’t run. Hence, Brisbane hasn’t won a game since this condition flared up again.
Imagine North in the 90′s without Carey ! Or Essendom without Jimmy Hird !
When Riewoldt is firing, the Saints can continue to kid themselves about Koschitzke. However, “Tarzan” very rarely contributes to the forward line, and it’s time a replacement was sought and Kosi let go.
Goddard is the logical replacement at chf. He has the kpp height, mobility, skill etc and is their best bet to play there until Riewoldt’s return.
They have enough class around the ground (DalSanto,Hayes etc) to get them over the line. In the meantime, the Saints should look to see if any youngster on their list has the where with all to make a go of full forward.
