Melbourne is expected to contribute up to 10 AFL-listed players this season with Jake Spencer, James Strauss and Neville Jetta among those, while Melbourne-bound youngster Jack Viney may also put his hand up to play finals as well.
“It all helps,” Lovett said.
“I’ve been saying to the Casey players recently that last year, I wasn’t there, but there were only seven Melbourne players left that played through that period. I think with any of the aligned sides, your true strength is based around your VFL-listed players so that’s been the aim from day one, to really develop that and get games into the boys.”
“I think we’ve done that. Last year in the finals, there were three or four guys picked that never played a senior game all year. This year we’ve only been averaging just over 11 Melbourne boys all year so I think we’re in a far stronger position.”
“There’s a lot of clubs and players running around in Australia at the moment that won’t play finals. We’ve given ourselves a terrific opportunity of setting a top four position,” he said.
Lovett said it’s important to bounce back against Collingwood today, given the clubs’ second consecutive loss against Geelong last week.
“You don’t like to string losses together, it’s first time throughout the year that it’s happened to us. It certainly gives us a really good chance to have a look at what we’ve been doing,” he said.
Meanwhile, out-going Coburg coach Adam Potter is hoping his team can finish the season on a positive note in his last game as coach of the club today against Geelong.
“We’re fully aware that it’s a big challenge and they play that ground really well but at the same time, we’re looking forward to end on a positive note that’s for sure,” Potter said.
Potter believes Geelong can win the flag given the top personnel it has playing with it at VFL level.
“They’re probably one of the in form teams of the competition, they had a good winning streak in the second half of the year, they have some depth with the likes of Hogan and Varcoe. Dawson Simpson’s a good ruckman. I definitely think they’re a chance come finals time,” he said.
