Melbourne’s Tom McDonald hospitalised with lung injury

Tom McDonald injuryONE week after winning the Rising Star nomination, Melbourne youngster Tom McDonald was hospitalised after a collision with Brisbane Lions forward Daniel Merrett at the Gabba yesterday.

The incident occurred five minutes into the game  when McDonald, 19, took an accidental knee to the chest from Merrett during a marking contest.  McDonald came off the field but after coughing up blood was immediately taken to  hospital. Reports suggest that the young defender has a suspected punctured lung.

After the game, in which they lost to the Lions by 61 points,  Melbourne coach Mark Neeld confirmed that McDonald would would remain in Brisbane and not fly back to Melbourne with the team

“The word coming back from the hospital is that he’s going to be OK although sore for a while,” Neeld said.

The club has since announced that, because of the nature of the injury, McDonald will be actually be driven back to Melbourne from Brisbane.

“Craig Lees, player welfare manager, and Tom are driving back from Brisbane,” said Football manager Josh Mahoney.

“They’ll start driving back on Monday and then stay a night in Sydney and then get back to the club on Tuesday.”
