MELBOURNE

THE Demons have a wealth of options in terms of young kids coming through the system. But now is the time for the club to stop blaming its poor performances on youth and compete and win matches.

It will take time for the perennial wooden spooners to climb the ladder to finals contention but we should finally a see a Demons line up that is more capable of causing a few upsets this season.

They will look to players such as Jamie Bennell, Colin Sylvia and Clint Bartram to step up. While Aaron Davey is perhaps the clubs’ most important player and should continue to provide a presence. The real stories are going to be on the form of top draft picks Tom Scully and Jack Trengrove. While there’s also Jack Watts.

NEW PERSONNEL
On-field: Jack Fitzpatrick Max Gawn, Jordan Gysberts, Tom Scully, Luke Tapscott, Jack Trengove (NAB AFL Draft), Joel Macdonald (NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft), John Meesen *, Michael Newton * (NAB AFL Rookie Draft) – * Redrafted
Off-field: Brad Gotch (Casey Scorpions)

BEST 22
B: Jamie Bennell, James Frawley, Jared Rivers
HB: Joel Macdonald, Matthew Warnock, Jack Grimes
C: Cale Morton, Brent Moloney, Aaron Davey
HF: Brad Green, Brad Miller, Colin Sylvia
F: Austin Wonaeamirri, Matthew Bate, Liam Jurrah
Foll: Mark Jamar, Cameron Bruce, James McDonald
I/C: Jack Trengove, Tom Scully, Nathan Jones, Stef Martin

Our crystal ball: The Demons have shown they are in for the long haul and football manager Chris Connolly said this year it must be about winning and not just competing. The Demons mean business but a rising injury toll won’t help them early on. Finals will perhaps be another two or three years away for the Dees. Prediction: 15th
