ESSENDON’S Jake Carlisle has earned the Rising Star nomination for Round 9 of the 2012 season after a seven mark and 13 possession performance against the GWS Giants last Saturday night.
Carlisle, 20, was the 24th pick of the 2009 Draft and had played 10 games for the Bombers heading into this season. Working initially as a forward he has moved into a key defender role for the club after the arrival of James Hird as coach in 2011.
“(Hird’s) influenced me a lot while he’s been here.” said Carlisle on his coach.
When asked what it is about Carlisle’s game that makes him an emerging player, Hird said ”Jake reads the game very well and his ability to take a mark as a defender and use the ball very well helps create our attack.”
“But he’s a very good defender as well and we’ve swung him round forward to back and it’s good to have versatility like that in the team.”
