AFTER Friday night’s incident that saw Collingwood’s Sharrod Wellingham break Carlton’s Kade Simpson jaw, it was widely acknowledged that the Magpies midfielder was going to miss some time when he fronted the Match Review Panel today.
And miss time he will with Wellingham pleading guilty to the level five rough conduct charge and accepting a three-match ban.
While the original charged levied on Wellingham normally carries a five-match penalty but, Wellingham’s existing five-year good record (in that he had not been suspended in that period) saw the sanction lowered to just three matches if he provided an early guilty plea.
Which he did. Quickly.
There will, however, be a number of football fans furious with this outcome.
Simpson will miss at least four weeks with a broken jaw and for some fans the fundamental fairness of a system that allows an early plea to reduce the penalty by 40% will have to be questioned.
