Wellingham accepts three match penalty
Posted by Football NationJul 9. 2012 7:02 pmAFTER Friday night’s incident that saw Collingwood’s Sharrod Wellingham break Carlton’s Kade Simpson jaw, it was widely acknowledged that the Magpies midfielder was going to miss some time when he fronted the Match Review Panel today.
And miss time he will with Wellingham pleading guilty to the level five rough conduct charge and accepting a three-match ban.
While the original charged levied on Wellingham normally carries a five-match penalty but, Wellingham’s existing five-year good record (in that he had not been suspended in that period) saw the sanction lowered to just three matches if he provided an early guilty plea.
Which he did. Quickly.
There will, however, be a number of football fans furious with this outcome.
Simpson will miss at least four weeks with a broken jaw and for some fans the fundamental fairness of a system that allows an early plea to reduce the penalty by 40% will have to be questioned.
Watch the video again if you haven’t already done so and let us know what you think of the penalty.

WHAT A JOKE… Wellingham only serves 3 weeks when he deliberately tried to knock out Simpson… it was deliberate and INTENTIONAL attack on his head… it was disgusting and it was deplorable… I hope kids around the country don’t look up to this mongrel !!!
