The incident occurred in the third term when Wellingham collided late and high with Simpson. While it has been described in some media outlets as a marking contest it looked nothing like one. Simpson moved across to intercept a pass from Dane Swan, Wellingham, his eyes clearly off the ball, delivered the king hit that was sickening in its after effects. Wellingham was immediately reported for rough conduct
Here is the video of the incident:
The Carlton Football Club announced that Simpson will not have surgery but will have band fixation to his jaw and is expected to miss up to four matches.
Wellingham will go before the Match Review Panel on Monday and observers are predicting that he may miss up to four games for the hit.
